  • Description

Malagasy's former Vice-President Andre Resampa, detained for a year on suspicion of plotting with a foreign power, was freed on Thursday (8th June) and cleared of all allegations.

    M. Resampa also the former Secretary-General of the Social Democratic Party, was arrested last June for alleged complicity with an unnamed foreign country in a plot to topple the regime of President Philibert Tsiranana. Three separate attempts were said to have been made in 1971 to put this former Vice-President in power.

But President Tsiranana went on Malagasy Radio on Thursday to say that the claim that M. Resampa had been plotting had been unfounded. No charges had been made against M. Resampa at the time of his arrest.

    M. Resampa also went on the radio to tell listeners that he would like to thank the government for recognising his innocence and giving him his liberty. He continued: "My liberation is proof that I was never a traitor to my country, that I have never plotted with any power whatever".

The announcement of the decision was first made over the radio by General Gabriel Ramanatsoa, who was given full executive powers as Prime Minister by the President on May 18th following the declaration of a State of Emergency after riots and a general strike.
