Background: The Republic of Chad last week celebrated the twelfth anniversary of its independence from France with a military parade in the capital, Fort Lamy.
President Francois Tombalbaye - who has been Chad's head of state since independence - inspected the parade. During the ceremony he told the troops that they held the responsibility henceforth for defending discipline, honour and fidelity.
