  • Description

The Portuguese Communist Party leader, Dr Alvaro Cunhal, has predicted bloodshed if centrist and conservative parties win parliamentary majority in next months's elections.

Dr Cunhal was addressing a meeting of Communist Party delegates in Lisbon, the Portuguese, on Sunday (14 March).

He said the country could be plunged into a "dark night of terror and blood" if the centrists and conservatives won a majority.

Dr Cunhal branded as "agents of foreign imperialism" the Centrist Popular Democratic Party (PPD), the Conservative Centre Democrats (CDS) and the Monarchists.

He said if the PPD, CDS and other "reactionary" parties won a parliamentary majority, they might try to liquidate all the achievements of the Portuguese revolution.

A victory for these parties could mean the elimination of liberties, the use of repression and large-scale violent military actions in which people would be surrounded, expelled, arrested and machine-gunned, he claimed.

The meeting on Sunday was attended by about 1,000 delegates and 5,000 guests of the Communist Party. Its main task was to approve the party's tactics for next month's elections.

SYNOPSIS: The Lisbon sports pavilion where a thousand Portuguese Communist Party observers met on Sunday to discuss tactics for next month's parliamentary elections.

The main speaker at the meeting was the Party leader, Dr Alvaro Cunhal, who predicted bloodshed if centrist and conservative parties gained a parliamentary majority.

Dr Cunhal said the country" would be plunged into a dark night of terror and blood" if the centrists and conservatives won a majority. He branded as "agents of foreign imperialism" the Centrist Popular Democratic Party, the Conservative Centre Democrats and the Monarchists.

He said if elected the "reactionary" parties would try to liquidate all the achievements of the Portuguese revolution.

The Party has set itself a target of one million votes in the forthcoming elections. If they succeed this would be three hundred thousand more than they won last year, when they came third behind the Socialists and the PPD.
