  • Description

The people of Greece decided by an overwhelming majority on Sunday (8 December) to turn their country into a presidential republic.

The vote in Sunday's Monarchy referendum means that exiled King Constantine, who now lives in Surrey, England, is finally deposed. About seventy percent voted for the change.

Greeks demonstrated in the capital that night, bearing placards which said the former king was dead and chanting "turn the palaces into schools".

The results did not come as a surprise. Opinion polls taken before the voting indicated that the people did not want to have the monarchy restored.

Shortly before midnight, in a broadcast to the nation, the Greek Premier, Constantine Karamanlis, called on the people to respect, without reservation, the Referendum result.

He said the Referendum was carried out in an irreproachable way and that the people decided, for the first time, free and uninfluenced on this critical question. Opposition leaders in the country praised the people for their decision.
