Background: Foreign journalist were recently taken on a tour of a "re-education camp" for senior officers of the former South Vietnamese Army near Saigon, in South Vietnam.

More than 25 former generals are being detained in the camp, 10 miles outside the city. They appeared slightly bewildered when they first met the newsmen but soon overcame their initial shyness and spoke freely through interpreters.

All the inmates in the camp said they were being well treated by their captors and were allowed to write to and receive letters from their families.

The camp itself was formerly used as a training station for newly drafted soldiers. The generals are now back to the lift they knew when they first started their military careers.

The former Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Nguyen Huu Co striped to the waist for newsmen, and, accompanied by General Lee Van Than, showed they were as fit as when they were first captured.

All the camp inmates work around the camp doing such jobs as cleaning and preparing food in the camp kichen.

As well as physical exercise, the former generals use their free time singing the songs of the victorious Communist forces.
