  • Description

Four-sided talks opened in Brazzaville at the weekend aimed at settling the border dispute between the Gabonese Republic and Equatorial Guinea. President Marien Nguabi was at Maya Maya airport to greet his fellow intermediary, President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, and the leaders of the disputant nations, President Albert Bongo of the Gabonese Republic and President francisco Nguema of Equatorial Guinea.

The quarrel is over Equatorial Guinea's unilateral action in extending its territorial waters to 110 nautical miles. The Gabonese Republic has complained that this action means that Equatorial Gupinea has occupied three small offshore islands which are Guinea's territory.

The conference was set up following the recent summit of chiefs of state from Central and East Africa in Dar as Salaam. As well as the four presidents, the Brazzaville conference was attended by Mr. Nzo Ekangaki, Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity, and his deputy, Maitre Kamanda Wa Kamanda. A communique was later issued.
