    A Spanish boxer has died in hospital in Madrid -- five days after being knocked out in a match. Twenty-three-year-old Rubio Melero was knocked out in the seventh round of his title fight against Spanish middleweight champion Francis Rodriguez. He went into a deep come from which he never recovered, and died of heart failure on Wednesday morning (22 February).

    SYNOPSIS: Melero, wearing shorts with dark stripe round waist, took on the champion in Madrid's Sports Palace. A brave young fighter, he lacked experience and skill, and was completely outclassed by Rodriguez.

    He received brutal punishment from the champion. Ringside spectators saw him dazed, groggy and virtually defenceless. Spanish sportswriters were unanimous in condemning the referee for not stopping the fight.

    It was revealed later that the stadium had no medical facilities. the unconscious challenger waited 20 minutes before the Red Cross sent a car to take him to hospital. Melereo came from a poor family in Almeica in southern Spain. He began boxing as an amateur at the age of 14 becoming a professional two years ago. Of the seven professional matches he had, he won six and lost one.
