Background: The new ruler of Muscat and Oman, Sultan Sayyid Quabus, received a Wildly enthusiastic welcome when he arrived in Muscat, capital of the Gulf state, for the first time since he took power.
The 30-year-old Sultan, who deposed his father, Sultan Said Bin Taimour, last Friday (July 24), flew to Muscat from his palace at Salalah, in the southern district, on Thursday (July 30).
Colourful crowds of tribesmen, many of whom had travelled hundreds of miles (kilometers) from all parts of the country, contrasted with the more sober dress of Indian merchants and members of the English-officered armed forces. Muscat was decorated with triumphal arches and a holiday mood prevailed.
When he took power the Sultan promised that he would bring Muscat out of its present backward state, and he has already offered an amnesty to rebels who opposed his father.
