    Background: SYNOPSIS: Twenty-year-old student teacher Nikolai Andrianov performs on the horse at the National Gymnastics Championships at Kiev earlier this month.

    His was a performance which pleased the large audience and particularly his trainer Nikolai Telkachev a Merited Master of the sport.

    With the Munich Olympics foremost in the minds of the gymnasts, and a high reputation to live up to, the Championships saw many fine performances.

    The programme included this fine display by ex-World Champion Mikhail Vorenin on the flying rings.

    An event which never fails to draw the attention of spectators is the Championship sequence on the parallel bars.

    Other competitors watched hopefully, and with great interest in other techniques. With Nikolai Adrianov they saw next one of their number on the high bar.

    The Championships this year were judged by former Olympic champion gymnasts Boris Shakhlin and Pavel Stolbev
    The overall winner at Kiev proved to be Nikolai Andrianov who received his gold modal, flanked by European Champion Victor Klimenke and Mikhail voronin. These Soviet gymnasts are new looking forward to further successes at Munich.
