  • Description

A tornado sneaked out of a squall line over Lake Okeechobee in Florida October 19, struck the farming town of Pahokee. A 70-year-old man was killed and sixteen others were injured.

Pahokee is located about forty miles west of Palm Beach. More than fifty homes were demolished by the twister. One house was lifted from its foundation - carried 400 feet across a highway and railroad tracks - then dropped into a field.

Cars went flying through the Sunday morning air, landing on roads and trees. Railroad freight cars were pushed from the tracks by the winds.

The tornado first hit an airport, where nine crop-dusting planes were turned into junk. It then roared between the rows of migrant farm workers' homes and made kindling wood out of them.
