    Background: NOTTINGHAM, UK

The England second team beat New Zealand by 2-0 in a friendly match played in Nottingham on November 13. The final score-line could have showed a far greater margin of victory if the England side had converted more of its chances. New Zealand, a side mostly made up of part-timers adopted a strategy of massed defence. Although England dominated the midfield and mounted a series of attacks, they struggled to open the scoring. Steve Hodge broke the deadlock in the twentieth minute when he picked up a pass from his Nottingham Forest team-mate Peter Davenport and his shot went off in the post. The New Zealand team had one serious attack, when a long run from Turner, playing in midfield, won them a free kick on the edge of the penalty box, but the english defence headed over the bar. Despite winning 25 corners in the match, it was not until the last minute that England scored their second goal. Gary Mabbutt headed home from Nigel Callaghan's cross to make it 2-0.
