  • Description

Former Argentine President Hector Campora has taken up political asylum in Mexico after more than three years as a virtual prisoner in his own country. Since 1976 he'd been living as a refugee at the Mexican Embassy in Buenos Aires. The military government gave him a safe conduct out of Argentina this week after an operation revealed he was suffering from cancer.

SYNOPSIS: The 70-year old former leader, was put aboard a commercial flight for Mexico on Tuesday (27 November). He was accompanied by his wife and one of their sons, a Mexican Foreign Ministry official and an Argentine doctor. His other son and a former Peronist leader remained behind in the Mexican Embassy. The three of them took refuge there in March 1976 after the military coup which toppled President Maria Estela Peron.

The military government held Doctor Compora responsible for the wave of political violence that plagued Argentina until last year. He was accused of starting it by declaring an amnesty for thousands of jailed guerrillas during his two month Presidency in 1973. Last week the government allowed Doctor Campora to undergo an exploratory operation. It revealed a neck tumour, thought to be malignant.
