Soviet leaders in Moscow on Friday (2 December) discussed Middle East developments with Mr. Tareq Aziz, a special envoy representing Iraqi President Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr. After a welcome from Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, Mr. Aziz who is a member of Iraq's Revolutionary Command Council, handed to the Soviet Chairman, Mr. Leonid Brezhnev, a message from President Bakr.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Gromyko greets Mr. Aziz, who had come to set out Iraq's thinking on the latest Middle East moves. Iraq is hostile to a negotiated peace settlement and turned down an invitation from Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to attend his summit with Israel in Cairo.
Later, Mr. Brezhnev who was to tell Mr.. Aziz that the Soviet Union wanted a lasting Middle East peace and was opposed to what he called 'the intrigues of imperialism and reaction in the area'. Mr. Brezhnev assured him of Soviet backing for the Arab cause.
