• Short Summary

A PASSENGER AIRLINER CARRYING 84 PEOPLE CRASHED INTO THE SEA ABOUT SIX MILES (10KMS) EAST OF NEW YORK LAST NIGHT (MONDAY).

  • Description

ANIMATED MAP OF ROUTE AIRLINER WAS TO TAKE, SOUND INTERVIEWS WITH A SAILOR ON COASTGUARD DUTY AND A PILOT, BOTH OF WHOM WERE EYE-WITNESSES TO THE CRASH, AND NIGHT SHOTS OF CROWDS ON A BEACH NEAR THE SCENE OF THE CRASH WITH FLARES EXPLODING IN THE SKY AS SEARCH FOR WRECKAGE GOES ON.

    TRANSCRIPT:

INTERVIEWER: AND WHAT HAPPENED....WHAT DID YOU SEE?

SAILOR: I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF ANSWERING THE SWITCHBOARD WHEN I HEARD A THUD...AND...I DROPPED THE PHONE AND I LOOKED AROUND OFF-SHORE, AND, APPROXIMATELY SOUTH-WEST OF THE TOWER I SEE THESE FLAMES. THEY WERE OUT TEN FEET HIGH. I'M NOT SURE WHAT WAS BURNING OR IF THEY WERE ACTUALLY FLAMES - IT WAS VERY FOGGY, OFF-SHORE VISIBILITY WAS ABOUT FIVE MILES. WELL, I WENT OUTSIDE AND I TOOK A BETTER LOOK AND THERE WERE FLAMES AND I WENT AND REPORTED TO THE O.D.

PILOT: ABOUT THIRTY SECONDS LATER WE SAW A GLOW IN THE SKY WHICH CAME FROM BEHIND AND BELOW US, AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ON MAKING A LEFT TURN INTO OUR LANDING WE SAW FLAMES ON THE WATER.

INTERVIEWER: ARE YOU ABLE TO SAY...DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THE BASIS OF YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHICH I KNOW IS VAST, AS TO WHETHER THIS PLANE COULD HAVE EXPLODED IN THE AIR - OR DID EXPLODE IN THE AIR?

PILOT: I WOULD HESITATE TO SPECULATE ON THAT, BUT A PERSONAL OPINION FROM THE ANGLE FROM WHICH I SAW THE GLOW I WOULD SAY IT CAME ON HITTING THE WATER.

Background: A PASSENGER AIRLINER CARRYING 84 PEOPLE CRASHED INTO THE SEA ABOUT SIX MILES (10KMS) EAST OF NEW YORK LAST NIGHT (MONDAY). ALL ABOARD WERE KILLED. THE PLANE JUST LEFT KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON A DOMESTIC FLIGHT.

THE AIRLINER, A DC-7 PROPELLOR AIRCRAFT OWNED BY EASTERN AIRLINES, WAS ON A DOMESTIC FLIGHT ORIGINATING IN BOSTON. IT HAD FLOWN FROM THERE TO NEW YORK AND HAD JUST TAKEN OFF AGAIN FOR RICHMOND, AND ATLANTA IN GEORGIA WHEN THE CRASH OCCURRED. ONE EYE-WITNESS WAS A SAILOR WHO WAS ON COAST GUARD DUTY AT THE TIME.

ANOTHER EYE-WITNESS WAS A PILOT WHO WAS PREPARING TO LAND HIS AIRLINER AT NEW YORK WHEN THE CRASH OCCURRED.

HELICOPTERS AND SMALL CRAFT TOOK PART IN A MASSIVE SEARCH IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING. FROM A NEARBY BEACH A CROWD OF PEOPLE SAW FLARES BURSTING IN THE SKY ABOVE THE AREA WHERE THE PLANE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE CRASHED. A FEW BODIES HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF WRECKAGE, BUT THE REMAINS ARE BEING KEPT UNDER CLOSE SECURITY GUARD WHILE AVIATION EXPERTS PROBE THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH - THE THIRD WORST SINGLE PLANE DISASTER IN UNITED STATES HISTORY.
