  • Description

Frank Sinatra, the American showman, has been leading the Australian press a merry chase since arriving for a concert tour this week.

Sinatra prides himself on shunning the press for 14 years -- and says he has no intention of reversing this policy for Australian newsmen. Now he's been black banned by unions irate at alleged insults thrown at newsmen -- and punches directed by his bodyguard at TV camera teams.

He's reported to have called Australian women journalists "hookers" -- and the bodyguard has been involved in several clashes with news teams in Sydney and Melbourne.

In Sydney, Sinatra left his hotel hurriedly -- and the news teams took off in pursuit. Apart from a brief glimpse of the entertainer on the morning he arrived, he hasn't yet been seen in public in Sydney. But one enterprising TV team at least filmed the back of one of the most famous heads in showbiz -- from a car that set off after him.

He seemed somewhat cramped in the back of the Mercedes -- a larger Mercedes was apparently acting as a decoy vehicle. Just as the news car was pulling away from traffic lights, the decoy car spotted it and relayed the news to Sinatra by two-way radio. From then on it was the Sinatra version of hot-rodding -- with newsmen alleging that the decoy vehicle deliberately swerved on the expressway to keep them at bay.

Newsman George Willson, from the O- TEN TV network in Sydney said that when the chase became too dangerous, he ordered his driver to slow down. Sinatra and his men were last seen by them careering out of sight in the direction of Sydney Airport.
