Background: EX-KING FAROUK DIED IN ROME EARLY TODAY (THURSDAY). HIS DEATH CAME SHORTLY AFTER HE COLLAPSED DURING A LATE NIGHT MEAL IN A FASHIONABLE ROME RESTAURANT.

THE FORMER RULER OF EGYPT WAS DINING AT THE "ILE DE FRANCE" RESTAURANT ON THE AURELIAN ROAD OUTSIDE ROME. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A WOMAN, WHOM THE POLICE HAVE DECLINED TO IDENTIFY. HE COLLAPSED AT THE TABLE AND WAS RUSHED TO ROME'S SAN CAMILLO HOSPITAL. THERE HE WAS PLACED IN AN OXYGEN TENT -- BUT HE DIED AFTER A FEW MINUTES.

THE BODY OF EX-KING FAROUK HAS BEEN TAKEN TO A POLICE MORTUARY SO THAT THE CAUSE OF DEATH CAN BE ASCERTAINED. A HOSPITAL OFFICIAL SAID THE CORPULENT EX-MONARCH, FAMED FOR HIS EXPENSIVE LIVING, HAD ALMOST CERTAINLY SUCCUMBED TO A HEART ATTACK.
