A large oil slick which spilled from a tanker two weeks ago at Sao Sebastio, near the port of Santos in Brazil, has moved 400 Kilometres up the coast where it is threatening to disrupt Rio de Janeiro's summer tourist trade.

SYNOPSIS: With summer at its height in Brazil, Rio's Copacabana and Ipanema beaches are faced with possible oil pollution. A large oil slick which spilled into the sea at Sao Sebastio, which is Brazil's main oil terminal has been moving steadily up the coast pollution beaches on the way. Its progress is causing concern to authorities, and it is feared the slick may damage the area's rich sardine spawning grounds.

Lieutenant Commander Munson, of the U.S. Coast Guard, is one of several specialists who have been brought in to deal with the problem. Ecologists say the damage already caused is irreparable, and Brazilian authorities are holding the owners of the ship which caused the leak responsible. The ship is the Liberian registered 'Brazilian Marina' and is currently being held in Sao sebastio port until its owners pay the cost of the clean-up operation.

But apart from the massive clean-up operation expected to cost 14 million U.S. dollars-the authorities have another problem. Rio is preparing for a tourist influx. This summer's main attraction the Brazilian Grand Prix and famous Rio carnival are less than a month away.
