  • Description

THE FIRST HAVANA "WAR CRIMES" TRIAL HAS ENDED IN A VERDICT OF GUILTY AND A SENTENCE OF DEATH. THIS WAS NO SURPRISE TO THE THOUSANDS OF CUBANS, WHO JAMMED THE SPORTS PALACE DURING THE NIGHT.

THE FIRST TRIAL BEGAN LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, AND WOUND UP THIS MORNING (date - source) -- 11-AND-A-HALF HOURS LATER. BY THE TIME THE VERDICT WAS ANNOUNCED, MOST OF THE 30-THOUSAND SPECTATORS HAD GONE HOME. THE FIRST DEFENDANT WAS MAJOR JESUS SOSA BLANCO. HE WAS ACCUSED OF TORTURING AND KILLING AT LEAST 108 (one-hundred and eight) PERSONS.

HE DENIED GUILT ON EVERY COUNT. WHAT HE DID, HE SAID, WAS DONE AS A SOLDIER UNDER ORDERS. THE TRIAL WAS HELD IN A ROMAN CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE, WITH THE SPECTATORS BOOING AT THE DEFENDANT, CALLING HIS "COWARD" AND "MURDERER." WHEN A WITNESS WOULD COMPLETE TESTIMONY, OR THE PROSECUTION WOULD SCORE AN IMPORTANT POINT, THEY WOULD APPLAUD OR CHEER. SOSA BLANCO (CQ) SHOUTED AT THE CROWD TO BE QUIET, BUT APPEARED AT EASE THROUGHOUT THE TRIAL, SMILING OCCASIONALLY. THE MAJOR MAY APPEAL HIS DEATH SENTENCE. THE HAVANA WILL CONTINUE THIS AFTERNOON.
