  • Description

AFTER A BREAK OF SEVERAL WEEKS REPRESENTATIVES OF THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS ON MONDAY (MARCH 23RD) RESUMED TALKS AIMED AT ENDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES.

MR. GLAFKOS CLERIDES, THE GREEK-CYPRIOT NEGOTIATOR, WENT TO THE HOME OF HIS TURKISH-CYPRIOT COUNTERPART, MR. RAUF DENKTASH FOR THE TALKS.

THE TALKS WERE SUSPENDED DURING THE RECENT TROUBLE IN CYPRUS WHICH WAS AGGRAVATED BY AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON PRESIDENT MAKARIOS EARLY THIS MONTH.

THE TALKS BEGAN IN JUNE 1968 AND HAVE BEEN INTERRUPTED SEVERAL TIMES.

THE MAIN STUMBLING BLOCK IS CLAIMED TO BE TURKISH CYPRIOT DEMANDS FOR SELF-GOVERNMENT IN SOLELY TURKISH AREAS OF THE ISLAND. THE GREEK CYPRIOT VIEW IS THAT THE ISLAND MUST BE RULED AS ONE STATE.

BOTH SIDES, HOWEVER, HAVE REPEATEDLY AFFIRMED THEIR INTENTIONS OF FINDING A WAY OF ENDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE LARGE GREEK CYPRIOT COMMUNITY AND THE SMALLER TURKISH CYPRIOT COMMUNITY.
