  • Description

MORE THAN HALF OF INDIA'S 210 MILLION VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS ON FEB 19, IN WHAT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE "WORLD'S BIGGEST DEMOCRATIC GENERAL ELECTION".IT IS INDIA'S THIRD ELECTION SINCE INDEPENDENCE.

FILM SHOWS VOTERS IN THE UTTAH PRADESH STATE IN THE NORTH, WHERE, AS IN OTHER RURAL AREAS, BALLOTS WERE CAST MORE ENTHUSIASTICALLY THAN IN MOST OF THE CITIES.

SEVEN OUT OF THE 13 INDIAN STATES WENT TO THE POLLS ON FEB 19.

RESULTS WILL NOT BE KNOWN UNTIL MARCH 1, WHEN THE FINAL COUNT IS ANNOUNCED, BUT THE FATE OF 247 SEATS IN THE NEW DELHI PARLIAMENT OF 494 WAS DECIDED BY SUNDOWN ON THAT DAY.

VOTING WAS A CHANCE FOR VILLAGERS AND COUNTRY PEOPLE TO DRESS UP IN THEIR BEST CLOTHES FOR THE LONG RIDES, OFTEN BY BULLOCK DART, TO THE POLLING BOOTHS.THERE THEY WERE GIVEN TWO PAPERS, ONE PINK FOR THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY CANDIDATES, THE OTHER WHITE FOR LOK SABHA (LOWER HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT) CANDIDATES.THESE WERE PRINTED IN THE LOCAL LANGUAGE AND EACH PARTY HAD A CLEAR SYMBOL FOR ILLITERATES.THE VOTING WAS SECRET, THEN THE VOTERS WERE THUMB-PRINTED IN INDELIBLE INK ON IDENTIFICATION PAPERS TO PREVENT DOUBLE VOTING.

BECAUSE OF THE HUGE NUMBER OF VOTERS AND THE VAST DISTANCES INVOLVED, POLLING, WHICH BEGAN FEB 16 - IS SPREAD OVER NINE DAYS.INDICATIONS ARE THAT MORE 50 PER CENT OF THOSE ELIGIBLE ARE VOTING - MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.THE RESULT IS EXPECTED TO FAVOUR THE CONGRESS PARTY, THE GOVERNING PARTY LED BY MR NEHRU.
