Background: A gas explosion in the centre of Algiers killed five people, injured thirty others and caused extensive damage to an apartment building and the city's biggest department store on Saturday, 29 July.

The Interior Ministry gave the reason for the explosion as an accumulation of gas for several days in the three-storey apartment building. Leaking gas was then set alight by a spark from a passing car--which was thrown across the narrow street into the back of the government-owned department store.

Most of the inside of the store was completely wrecked, with rubble from the two buildings strown across the street.
