  • Description

The Middle East situation -- and on Friday (22 October) the United Nations Security Council voted 13 to nil to renew the mandate for keeping U.N. peace-keeping forces in the buffer zone of the Sinai Desert for another year. China and Libya did not participate in the voting. The peace-keeping force has now been in Sinai for two and a half years, and negotiations between Israel and Egypt are at a standstill. However, the Security Council President, Mr. Iqbal Akhund of Pakistan, said if there were developments between the two countries, the Security Council may be called on to reconsider its decision.
