IN BRITAIN - A BLACK DAY FOR THREE OF THE WORLD'S TOP GOLFERS TODAY (FRIDAY), AMERICAN JACK NICKLAUS, CANADA CUP CHAMPION; KEN VENTURI, UNITED STATES OPEN CHAMPION AND TONY LEMA, THE BRITISH OPEN CHAMPION, ALL CRASHED IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PICCADILLY INVITATION WORLD MATCH-PLAY TOURNAMENT.

NICKLAUS WAS BEATEN THREE AND TWO BY THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION, BRUCE DEVLIN: VENTURI WAS CRUSHED FOUR AND TWO BY SOUTH AFRICAN GAY PLAYER, HOLDER OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLE, AND LEMA WENT OUT, FOUR AND THREE, AGAINST THE BRITISH MATCH PLAY CHAMPION, NEIL COLES.

THE OVERALL RESULTS OF THE DAY MUST HAVE PROVIDED ONE OF THE BIGGEST GOLFING UPSETS FOR MANY YEARS, AND THE ONLY RAY OF HOPE FOR THE UNITED STATES WAS THE ONE HOLE VICTORY GAINED BY ARNOLD PALMER, THE U.S. MASTERS CHAMPION OVER BRITAIN'S PETER BUTLER.

LEMA, HOWEVER, WAS NOT 100 PER CENT FIT. HE WAS TAKEN ILL WITH STOMACH PAINS AND DELAYED HIS MORNING ROUND BY 45 MINUTES WHILE BEING TREATED BY A DOCTOR, HE STARTED BADLY AND LOST THE FIRST FOUR HOLES AND BECAME FIVE DOWN AT THE SIXTH.

THIRTY-YEAR-OLD COLES, WATCHED BY OVER 12,000 SPECTATORS, PLAYED THE FINEST GOLF IN THIS STAR-STUDDED FIELD. HIS SCORE OF SEVEN UNDER FOUR OVER THE COURSE BROUGHT HIM AND DEVLIN TOGETHER IN TOMORROW'S SEMI-FINAL.

PALMER FAVOURITE FOR THE FIRST PRIZE OF GBP5000 GOT THE BETTER OF BUTLER IN AN EXCITING FINISH AND WON BY ONE HOLE.

NICKLAUS, SEEDED NUMBER TWO, WAS ALWAYS STRUGGLING AGAINST DEVLIN. THE AUSTRALIAN WAS THREE UP AT THE HALFWAY STAGE AND INCREASED HIS LEAD EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON WHEN HE TOOK THE 20TH. NICKLAUS HIT BACK AND WAS ONLY TWO DOWN AT THE 31ST, BUT HE SPOILT PLAY AT THE 33RD, HITTING A TREE WITH HIS DRIVE AND BUNKERING HIS THIRD SHOT. DEVLIN SECURED THE NECESSARY HALF AT THE NEXT TO WIN.
