  • Description

PRESIDENT JOHNSON RECEIVED A NOISY WELCOME FROM SEVERAL THOUSAND DEMONSTRATORS WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE CENTURY PLAZA HOTEL IN LOS ANGELES ON FRIDAY NIGHT TO ADDRESS A FUND-RAISING DINNER ON BEHALF OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY OPPONENTS OF THE WAR IN VIETNAM, AND AMONG THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS MUHAMMAD ALI, WHOSE WORLD BOXING TITLE HAS BEEN REMOVED SINCE HE REFUSED SERVICE IN THE AMERICAN ARMY.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON ENTERED THE HOTEL, WITH HIS DAUGHTER LINDA, THROUGH A REAR ENTRANCE AND DID NOT SEE THE DEMONSTRATION OR THE LATER VIOLENT SCUFFLES BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND THE POLICE.

THIRTEEN-HUNDRED POLICEMEN RINGED THE HOTEL AND THE DEMONSTRATORS APPROACHED IT. THE MARCH WAS STOPPED BY A POLICE CORDON, AND A POLICE OFFICER FORMALLY ANNOUNCED THAT THE MARCH HAD BEEN DECLARED UNLAWFUL.

TWENTY MINUTES LATER, WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS SHOWED NO SIGN OF DISPERSING, THE POLICE MOVED IN TO BREAK UP THE GATHERING.

THERE WERE VIOLENT SCENES AS POLICE, WIELDING THEIR BATONS AND SHOUTING, PUSHED INTO THE CROWD. MORE THAN THIRTY PEOPLE WERE INJURED, AND FIFTY-ONE ARRESTS WERE MADE.
