    Only eight out of the 59 entries finished the course of the fifth "Rallye du Bandama" -- a demanding 4,000 kilometre (2,500 mile) drive around the Ivory Coast. The list of Sunday's finalists (30 December) was dominated by French and Japanese care, although the drivers came from West Germany, France, Austria and the Ivory Coast.

    The drivers covered the course in two days, starting from Abidjan on Friday (28 December), and completing the eight stages around the circuit by Sunday. Besides trophies, the drivers were also competing for a total of 12,500,000 francs (CFA) (approximately 2,500 pounds sterling) in prize money.

    The man to finish first in this prestigious West African Rally was Edgar Herman??? of West Germany, driving a Datsun 1800. B. Neyret, winner of the rally two years ago, took fifth place, driving a Citroen SN. The top African driver -- M. Mitry of the Ivory Coast, who was fourth was also driving a Datsun.

    The day after the rally was over, New Year's Eve, M. Etienne Ahin, the Ivory Coast's Sports Minister, presented the awards during a reception for the drivers.

    SYNOPSIS: Only eight cars, out of fifty-nine starters finished in this year's "Rallye du Bandama". The winning car, a Datsun 1800, driven by a West German, Edgar Hermann.

    The eight cars completing the demanding Ivory Coast rally were either Japanese or French-built. Few finished the four thousand kilometre course unscathed.

    Trophies and prize money totalling over two-thousand five hundred pounds sterling were awarded at a reception held in Abidjan on New Year's Eve. The Ivory Coast's Minister for Sports, M. Etienne Ahin, presented the awards at the Monday evening ceremony.

    The top African driver was M. Mitry of the Ivory Coast. He finished fourth, and like the winner, was driving a Datsun. Two lady drivers from France were among the finishers, although the men dominated the rally.
