  • Description

WEEKEND VISAS FOR AUSTRIANS TO VISIT CZECHOSLOVAKIA IS THE LATEST POINTER TO A THAW IN EUROPE'S COLD WAR TENSIONS. POINT OF ENTRY IS NEAR BRATISLAVA, A CITY WHICH UP TO 1918 WAS UNDER AUSTRIAN CONTROL.

THE OPENING OF THE FRONTIER HAS PROVED POPULAR. YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) PASSPORT OFFICIALS STAMPED 2,800 VISAS AND WATCHED 800 CARS AND SEVERAL BUSES ROLL PASS THE CHECKPOINT. TRIPPERS COMMENTED FAVOURABLY ON THE SPEED OF CLEARANCE.

TODAY THE INFLUX IS ONLY ONE WAY...INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA WHERE GERMAN IS FREELY SPOKEN AND WHERE MANY FAMILIES HAVE LINKS ACROSS THE FRONTIER. MOTORISTS ARE NOT RESTRICTED TO BRATISLAVA. THEY MAY MOTOR INLAND IF THEY SO DESIRE.

BESIDES AUSTRIAN TOURISTS THERE WERE MANY RUSSIANS MAKING THEIR PAY TO POINTS OF INTEREST BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW SECTORS OF BRATISLAVA. TELEVISION HERE IS POPULAR WITH THE CITY INHABITANTS HAVING THE CHOICE OF THEIR OWN STATION OR NEARBY AUSTRIAN FARE.

THE SIGN "TUZEK" ABOVE A SHOPPING WINDOW INDICATES THAT CZECH CITIZENS ARE PERMITTED TO BUY FOREIGN GOODS IN DOLLARS, A CURRENCY WHICH THEY RECEIVE FROM RELATIVES ABROAD.
