Background: A big increase in Russian buying of wheat and steel was forecast today by the new Russian Ambassador to Australia - Mr. I. Kurdyukov. He said that in return, Russia would seek markets in Australia for a wide range of goods, including motor cars, timber and oil drilling equipment. Mr. Kurdyukov reached Sydney by air early this morning, after a flight from Darwin. His aircraft touched down at one o'clock but even at that hour, the External Affairs representative - Mr. Quamby - was there to greet mr. Kurdyukov and his wife.

Inside the terminal, the Ambassador was greeted by Mr. Skripov - on the right - the Soviet Charge d'Affaires. Mr. Skripov has been in charge of preparations in Canberra for the Ambassador's arrival. Mr. Kurdyukov told reporters that he would appoint a special commercial representative in Canberra to develop trade relations between Australia and Russia. He said Australian wheat could be landed in Russia's eastern provinces at a lower price than wheat from the Ukraine. This afternoon the Ambassador and his party returned to the airport for the flight to Canberra.

During the next few weeks the new Soviet Ambassador to Australia will present his credentials to the Governor General - Sir William Slim. Mr. Kurdyukov is the first Ambassador appointed since diplomatic relations were resumed recently. Australia and Russia suspended relations following the Petrov affair four years ago. Late this afternoon the new Ambassador arrived safely in Canberra to be met by members of his staff, and representatives of the Department of External Affairs.
