  • Description

Amos Mwasoni had a convincing win yesterday (Monday) in the 1967 Zambian national marathon championships at Broken Hill. Mwasoni covered the 26 miles 385 yards (42 Kms.) course in two hours, 36 minutes and even seconds.

Only 12 of the 27 runners who entered completed the course. Mwasoni led a group of five to an early lead. After 14 miles Mwasoni and G. Kalimbwe of the Zambian Police were well out from the rest.

Five miles from the finish Mwasoni turned on a burst of speed and breasted the tape about four minutes ahead of Kalimbwe.

It was Mwasoni's first marathon, although he recently won the national cross-country championship.

Last year's marathon winner Philip Banda could not match Mwasoni's pace and came in well behind.

The only European competitor, Paddy Walsh of Mount Makulu, finished second last.
