Five hundred scientists from five continents have been attending the 8th International Colloquium on Coffee, which began in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast capital, on Monday (28 November). Delegates there were hearing speeches and reading papers on various aspects of scientific research into coffee growing.
SYNOPSIS: The colloquium took place in the International Congress Palace of Abidjan's Hotel Ivoire. Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny attended the inaugural session with his wife.
Discussions were to cover four themes on coffee: flavouring problems; chemical and botanical composition; and developments in technology concerning the way that coffee affects the drinker's metabolism. They would also be considering such subjects as improving taste through water softening.
A keynote speech came from Monsieur Jean Lorougnon Guede, President of the International Scientific Coffee Association.
This was the first international colloquium on coffee to be held in Africa since the organisation was set up in 1966. Its primary function has been to explore as exhaustively as possible all scientific research into coffee and to make the growing body of information available to those involved in growing and marketing it.
President Houphouet-Boigny officially opened the colloquium, which was to end on Sunday (4 December). One day would be devoted to a tour of plantations and industrial installations at Yamoussoukro, near Abidjan.
