  • Description

The Innsbruck Olympic stadium will be appearing in new finery for the Winter Olympic Games in the Austrian city of Innsbruck in February next year.

Great investments have been made by the organising committee and the "Olympia-Stadion-Bertriebsgesellschaft" company to modernise and improve the site. Apart from new seating, a lighting system adapted to the needs of television and new acoustics, the colour is also new. Painting work was extremely complicated and was carried out by means of a new type of crane.

One of the more exciting additions is the new speed skating rink with its seamless concreted artificial ice area measuring 82 by 38 metres (yards). This will be used during the Winter Olympic as a training area for the figure skaters.

The stadium itself has seating for about 10,000 people.

Besides skating, the stadium will also be the site for ice hockey. The play-off rounds will take place there on 2 and 3 February. They will be organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation and are not part of the official Olympic programme.
