  • Description

There were new reports of strife in the Middle East on Wednesday (1 March) - this time on the border between Israel and Syria.

The fresh reports came just two days after Israeli forces pulled back across the border after occupying an area in Southern Lebanon for four days.

The withdrawal was accompanied by a stern Israeli warning that there would be further military action on the Lebanese border unless the Lebanese government curbs the activities of Arab commando units allegedly based in Southern Lebanon.

The Israelis say that during their occupation they killed about fifty Arab guerrillas - and wounded a hundred. They put their own casualties at eleven wounded.

SYNOPSIS: Sweeping into Southern Lebanon at the weekend - tanks and half-tracks of the Israeli Army. They crossed the border in pursuit of Arab commando units believe by the Israelis to be based in this part of Lebanon. Army commanders found conditions difficult -- so they cleared their own road across the rugged passes.

Reaction from Lebanese villagers varied. Many fled - but others gathered around to receive sweets - and leaflets outlining the reasons for the attack. The Israelis stayed in the area for four days.

Rows of houses suspected of being command bases were destroyed by the Israelis. They claim they killed fifty guerrillas and wounded a hundred. Their own casualties they put at eleven wounded. Israel has warned that this action will be repeated unless Lebanon takes steps to curb the activities of the guerrillas. An Israeli leader says the four-day invasion was aimed at demonstrating the kind of action Israel will take in the future "to put an end to terror". On Monday, the Israeli armour rolled back across the border. Israeli commanders reported that they'd encountered no resistance from Lebanese troops - who apparently waited on the sideline while the Israelis battled with commando groups, Two days after the withdrawal Israeli forces were engaged in more border action - but this time with Syria.
