  • Description

The Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland, was crowded Feb 4 when 35 competitors from 9 Europeans countries competed in the first day events of the Europeans Speed Skating Championships.

Although conditions for competitors were judged to be good, they were not so good for the spectators...and our cameraman. Heavy snowfalls and leaden skies hindered their view throughout the day.

At the end of day-one, during which the 500 and 5,000-meters events had been decided, Kositjkin of the U.S.R.R. won the 5,000-metres and led with 95.040 points. He was to hold this position at the end of the final day, when he won the 10,000 metres and the championship. A. Kouprianoff of France won the 1,500-metres, but could only finish third in the overall placing. Second place when to H. van der Grifft of the Netherlands.
