  • Description

FIRE BURNED THROUGH FIVE DECKS OF THE GERMAN LINER 'HANSEATIC' IN NEW YORK HARBOUR YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY).

THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE ROOM OF THE 30 THOUSAND TON VESSEL ONLY A FEW HORS BEFORE THE SHIP WAS TO HAVE SAILED FOR EUROPE.

THERE WERE ONLY A FEW PASSENGERS ABOARD THE VESSEL AND THEY, AND THE 500 CREW, WERE ALL SAFELY EVACUATED.

HEAT FROM THE FIRE WAS SO INTENSE THAT STEEL PLATING BUCKLED.

THE 'QUEEN MARY' AT PIER NEARBY, WAS DELAYED IN DEPARTING FOR EUROPE SO THAT SOME PASSENGERS FORM THE 'HANSEATIC' COULD BE ACCOMMODATED.

THE 'HANSEATIC' FORMERLY BELONGED TO THE CANADIAN PACIFIC FLEET OF 'EMPRESS' LINERS. THE VESSEL WAS BUILT IN SCOTLAND THIRTY SIX YEARS AGO, AND IS NOW OPERATED BY THE HAMBURG-ATLANTIC LINE.
