  • Description

The British High Commissioner in Aden, Sir Humphrey Trevelyan, has agreed to an Arab plan for the International Red Cross to take over Aden's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Meanwhile, hospital facilities in Aden are nearing breaking point following resignations due to the worsening security situation and attacks on medical staff only one surgeon remains there.

In the 900-bed hospital, where numerous anti-British slogans are chalked on the walls, Dr. Keith Sweetman is the only surgeon remaining. An Australian specialist surgeon, he is giving skilled surgical attention to the mounting number of casualties in fighting between rival Nationalist groups. In one day, he is said to carry out as many as 20 operations. He has been in Aden only three months, but says that he intends to stay as long as he is allowed.

Twenty-one other expatriot doctors have resigned recently, and by the end of the month, 18 British nursing sisters will be leaving at the end of their contracts.

The proposal that the hospital should be taken over by the International Red Cross came from the Arab Doctors' Association which complained that conditions at the hospital were critical because of a shortage of doctors and nurses.

The Association has also appealed to the Red Cross for surgeons and nurses to staff the hospital.
