Dr. Ludwig Erhard, West Germany's Vice Chancellor and Economics Minister, on July 13 visited the Saar, which was economically reunited with Germany at midnight on July 5.
Shortly after reunification there were wide-spread token strikes in the Saar in protest against higher prices after the change-over from the French franc to the mark, and there were further protest demonstrations by students of Saarbruecken University during Dr. Erhard's visit. At the Neunkirchene Steel Works, he tried to re-assure the workers, and said the Saar faced a promising economic future.
Arriving in the Saar at Homberg, on the former border with Germany, Dr.Erhard was welcomed by Dr.Schaefer, the Saar's Economics Minister.
