Background: RENATO LONGO, OF ITALY WON THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND TODAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE FIFTH TIME SINCE 1959. THE AMATEUR TITLE WENT TO MICHEL PELCHAT, OF FRANCE.

IN THE PROFESSIONAL RACE, 30-YEAR-OLD RENATO LONGO MADE A QUICK START AND BY THE SECOND LAP HAD LEFT THE OTHER 24 COMPETITORS FROM NINE COUNTRIES WELL BEHIND. HE FINISHED EIGHT ROUNDS OF THE DIFFICULT THREE-KILOMETRE (TWO-MILE) CIRCUIT OVER ROADS, FIELDS, WOODS, AND OBSTACLES, IN ONE HOUR, 17 MINUTES, 32 SECONDS.

SECOND CAME ROLF WOLFSHOHL, OF WEST GERMANY, AND THIRD WAS HERMANN GRETENER, OF SWITZERLAND. THE COURSE FOR THE RACE HAD BEEN MADE EVEN TOUGHER BY CONSTANT RAIN OVER THE WEEK-END.

WITH A FIELD OF 57 RIDERS FROM 16 COUNTRIES TAKING PART, THE AMATEUR CONTEST WAS STAGED SEPARATELY FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE AMATEURS HAD TO COVER ONLY SEVEN LAPS OF THE COURSE, INSTEAD OF THE PROFESSIONALS' EIGHT LAPS.

PELCHAT ESTABLISHED A DECISIVE LEAD IN THE FOURTH LAP, AND FINISHED IN ONE HOUR, TEN MINUTES, 36 SECONDS - TWO MINUTES 20 SECONDS AHEAD OF THE RUNNER-UP, JULIEN VAN DE HAESELVELDE, OF BELGIUM. THIRD CAME PETER FRISCHKNECHT, OF SWITZERLAND.
