  • Description

In the historic cathedral of Trondheim, King Olav V of Norway received the blessing of the Church on Sunday.

The blessing was an act symbolical of coronation which is no longer celebrated in Norway. The new King came to the throne in September on the death of his father, King Haakon VII, at the age of 85.

The King drove to the cathedral, the sanctuary of the nation, with Crown Prince Harold. There the King was received by Bishop Fjellbu of Trondheim, patriot and church leader who started a strong Church campaign against the German Army of Occupation in the Second World War, and who was finally obliged to flee to Britain.

At the blessing ceremony were members of the Royal Family: including Princess Astrid and Princess Ragenhild. Seen between the two is Prince Harold.

After the sermon, the King knelt at the devotional stall to receive the blessing from Bishop Fjellbu. Afterwards he knelt with the Bishop in prayer before the high altar.

Then the historic ceremony, broadcast to the nation, ended. As the royal procession left the cathedral the bells peeled, a royal salute was fired and bands struck up a march.
