The first elections to the Parliament of Bangladesh since Gen. Zia ur Rehman took over the government following coup that overthrew Khondkar Mushtaq Ahmed who had succeeded Seikh Mujib who had been killed int he earlier coup. The campaigns has meetings. The main tussle seems to be between the Bangladesh National Party of President Zia and the Awami League led by the followers of Seikh Mujib. It sees the ghost of Seikh Mujib is fighting the elections. At a largely attended public meeting Zia led the crowd in mass singing of patriotic songs and called upon them to vote for his party. Processionists who carried a life size portrait of Seikh Mujib shouted for support to the boat symbol, a symbol left behind by Seikh Mujib and asked the crowds to remember that the Seikh was killed.
Soon after the polling was over, vote counting began in Bangladesh at the polling centres. The first trends at some of the centre a visited by Visnews showed the poll going in favour of President Zia's BNP. The Awami League seemed to be making a good shoring, but the opposition vote was heavily split.
