  • Description

The traditional shop-window for East-West trade, the Leipzig Spring Fair, opened on Sunday (9 March), with 9,000 exhibitors and 60 countries taking part.

The East German Minister for Foreign Trade, Herr Horst Soelle, welcomed the Communist Party Leader, Herr Erich Honecker, the East German Head of State, Herr Willi Stoph, and the Prime Minister, Herr Horst Sindermann, Herr Soelle emphasised his country's willingness to do business with the West.

East Germany was prepared, he said, to trade and cooperate in economic, scientific and technical matters with all countries on the basis of equality, mutual advantage and non-interference in internal affairs.

A key theme in this year's Fair will be a determined effort by East Germany to increase its exports to the West, in order to the compensate for the spiralling import prices caused by the World energy crisis.

Herr Soelle said recently that East Germany planned a considerable rise in its trade with the West this year. But he warned that the economic malaise of the West demanded purposeful marketing work and a great effort in exporting high quality, competitive products.
