  • Description

BUSTLING, CROWDED SINGAPORE, WITH ITS LARGE WORK FORCE, IS A PLACE WHERE THERE'S SURE TO BE A STRIKE GOING ON SOMEWHERE ON ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

THE INCIDENCE OF INDUSTRIAL TROUBLE HAS MODERATED RECENTLY, COMPARED WITH THE OUTBREAKS OF CRIPPLING STRIKES IN RECENT YEARS.BUT THEY ARE STILL A REGULAR EVENT AND SOME CONTINUE FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS.

THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT, LED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, MR.LEE KUAN YEW, IS ANXIOUS TO SHOW POTENTIAL INVESTORS THAT SINGAPORE CAN HANDLE INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES.THE FINANCE MINISTER, DR.GOH KENG SWEE, RECENTLY ACCUSED SINGAPORE'S LEFT-WING UNIONS OF DELIBERATELY SABOTAGING INDUSTRY IN ORDER TO EMBARRASS THE GOVERNMENT.HE ANNOUNCED THAT A COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY WOULD BE SET UP TO INVESTIGATE THE BACKGROUND TO SINGAPORE'S INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES.

MANY OF SINGAPORE'S STRIKES ARE POLITICAL RATHER THAN A QUESTION OF JUSTICE FOR THE WORKER.SOME UNIONS ARE ALIGNED TO THE GOVERNING PEOPLES ACTION PARTY, OTHERS TO THE EXTREME LEFT-WING OPPOSITION, THE BARISAN SOCIALIST.OFTEN, THE STRIKE IS AN EXPRESSION OF A STRUGGLE FOR POLITICAL INFLUENCE AMONG THE WORKERS.

NEVERTHELESS, THE GOVERNMENT IS HANDLING CURRENT STRIKES CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT IS A SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT.AND IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO, VIOLENCE HAS BEEN AVOIDED.

THE STRIKERS CAST THEIR NET WIDE AND MANY DIFFERENT EMPLOYERS, LARGE OR SMALL, ARE AFFECTED.AT THE HEADQUARTERS OF BRITAIN'S FAR EAST LAND FORCES, CIVILIAN CLERKS AND LABOURERS HAVE BEEN STRIKE FOR NEARLY 10 WEEKS, PROTESTING AGAINST THE COMPENSATION THEY WILL SET WHEN THEY RETRENCHED AS BRITAIN REDUCES HER COMMITMENT IN SINGAPORE.

BUT AT THE FAMOUS SINGAPORE SHOP, C.K.TANG'S, A STRIKE INVOLVING UNION RECOGNITION WAS SETTLED IN A DAY AND A HALF.NO SOONER OVER, THAN ANOTHER STRIKE BEGAN IMMEDIATELY IN THE HOME APPLIANCES STORE NEXT DOOR TO TANG'S.

AT THE UNION BUILDING, THE HEART OF SINGAPORE'S BUSINESS AREA, A SHAREBROKERS FIRM, FRASER AND COMPANY, IS HIT BY A STRIKE.THE LAST WORD IS A BAKERS SHIP IN VICTORIA STREET.IT'S TEN EMPLOYEES WENT ON STRIKE IN APRIL 1961, AND THE SHOP HAS BEEN CLOSED EVER SINCE.ONE OLD MAN MAINTAINS THE PICKET OUTSIDE THE NEGLECTED PREMISES, BUT NINE OF THE TEN WORKERS HAVE FOUND JOBS ELSEWHERE.
