THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES SENATE, FERDINAND MARCOS, THE NATIONALIST PARTY'S PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE HAS A NARROW LEAD OVER PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL AFTER THE COUNTING OF EARLY RETURNS IN YESTERDAY'S (TUESDAY) ELECTION.

WITH ABOUT 30 PER CENT OF THE VOTES COUNTED, SENATOR MARCOS HAD 1,282,190 VOTES, AND PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL HAD 1,036,393 VOTES IN AN UNOFFICIAL TALLY.

THE THIRD PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, SENATOR RAUL MANGLAPUS WAS RUNNING A POOR THIRD.

HOWEVER, POLITICAL OBSERVERS SAY THE EARLY RESULTS SHOW NO DEFINITE TREND AND A CLOSE FINISH IS STILL EXPECTED.

BETWEEN 8 AND 9 MILLION VOTES WERE CAST IN THE ELECTION.

SENATOR MARCOS, AGED 48, IS A WARTIME HERO AND A LAWYER. PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL, AGED 55, HAS BEEN THE PHILIPPINES LEADER SINCE 1962.

THE ELECTION FOLLOWED THE USUAL VIOLENT TREND IN THE PHILIPPINES AND MORE THAN 30 PEOPLE DIED DURING THE CAMPAIGN AND IN VIOLENCE AT THE POLLS. TWENTY THOUSAND TROOPS WERE DEPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TO DEAL WITH ANY TROUBLE.

SENATOR MARCOS HAS BLAMED THE MACAPAGAL ADMINISTRATION IN HIS ELECTION CAMPAIGN FOR BRINGING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RETROGRESSION TO THE COUNTRY.
