  • Description

The body of West Germany's murdered ambassador to Guatemala, Count von Spreti, was flown by Luftwaffe jet from Guatemala to Bonn on Friday (10 April). Accompanied by West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel, the aircraft reached Bonn on Saturday (11 April).

The 62-year-old Count von Spreti was found shot on Sunday (April 5), five days after he was abducted by left-wing rebels. In exchange for the envoy's life, the rebels demanded 700,000 dollars (GBP290,000 Sterling) and the release of 25 political prisoners, a ransom the government refused to accept despite heavy pressure from Bonn.

During his stay of a few hours, Herr Scheel accused Guatemala of grossly violating international law in failing to save the envoy's life. His twofold mission was to bring back the body and to make a stiff personal protest to Guatemalan President Julio Cesar ??? Montenegro over the Central American government's handling of the kidnap-murder.

The coffin was taken from the National Cathedral, where a mass for the Ambassador had been held, to the airport where it was placed upon the West German Boeing 707 for the flight to Bonn.

Also aboard the aircraft were the Count's widow and his three children.

A West German honour guard greeted the aircraft when it arrived in Bonn. The coffin was borne by soldiers to a car for the ride into the city.
