    THE WINNING TIME WAS SIX HOURS ONE MINUTE AND 13 SECONDS.

    THE AMERICAN HOWMET GAS TURBINE CAR -- NUMBER 35 -- MAKING ITS EUROPEAN DEBUT, CRASHED ON LAP SIX AFTER 10 MINUTES OF THE RACE. DRIVER DICK THOMPSON, A WASHINGTON DENTIST, FAILED TO GET ROUND A HAIRPIN BEND AND HIS CAR WOUND UP EMBEDDED IN THE BANK. THOMPSON SAID AFTERWARDS HIS THROTTLE HAD STUCK. HE WAS UNHURT, BUT UNABLE TO COLLECT THE GBP1,000 PRIZE FOR THE FIRST TURBINE-ENGINED CAR TO FINISH.

    FOURTH WAS PAUL HAWKINS OF AUSTRALIA AND DOUG HOBBS OF BRITAIN IN A FORD G.T. -- CAR NUMBER FIVE.
