  • Description

THE CROWDS WHICH MILLED AROUND THE PRESIDENT JOHNSON DURING HIS TOUR OF THE APPALACHIAN REGION LAST WEEK HAVE CAUSED SOME ANXIOUS CONCERN FOR HIS SECURITY.

AMONG THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPRESSED FEAR THAT MR. JOHNSON IS EXPOSING HIMSELF NEEDLESSLY TO PERSONAL RISK, ESPECIALLY DURING HIS APPALACHIAN TOUR, IS FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMAN.

IT HAS BEEN FELT IN SOME QUARTERS THAT THE SITUATION IS MORE PERILOUS BECAUSE THE UNITED STATES HAS NO VICE-PRESIDENT, AND NEXT IN LINE IS SUCCESSION TO THE PRESIDENCY IS THE AGING SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, MR. JOHN MCCORMACK.

ON SATURDAY, MR. TRUMAN WAS PRESENT AT A NEWS CONFERENCE WITH PRESIDENT JOHNSON. HE REPEATED HIS STATEMENT EXPRESSING ANXIETY FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PRESIDENT. IN HIS REPLY, MR. JOHNSON TOLD THE NEWSMEN THAT HE "IS STILL GOING TO SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY AND NECESSARILY IS GOING TO ASSOCIATE WITH THEM."
