  • Description

HUNDREDS OF VIET CONG SYMPATHISERS HAVE FLED CAMBODIA IN THE WAKE OF ANTI-COMMUNIST FEELING THAT HAS FOLLOWED THE DOWNFALL OF PRINCE SIHANOUK. MANY OF THEM ARE FAMILIES OF VIET CONG GUERRILLAS AND THEY HAVE BEEN PERMITTED TO RETURN TO SOUTH VIETNAM WHERE THE GOVERNMENT HAS SET UP A REFUGEE CENTRE IN TAY NINH PROVINCE, 40 MILES WEST OF SAIGON.

THERE ARE ABOUT 200 WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE REFUGEE CAMP, NOT FAR FROM THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ORGANISED MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR THE REFUGEES AND IS SUPPLYING THEM WITH FOOD PROVIDED BY AMERICAN AID.

THE WOMEN EARN A SMALL INCOME BY WEAVING REED MATTRESSES AND WORKING IN THE NEARBY TOBACCO FIELDS. THEY HAVE TOLD SOUTH VIETNAMESE OFFICIALS THAT THEIR HUSBANDS ARE REMAINING IN CAMBODIA WHERE THEY WILL CONTINUE THE OPERATIONS AGAINST BOTH SOUTH VIETNAMESE AND CAMBODIANS GOVERNMENT FORCES.
