  • Description

Two minutes silence was observed throughout India on Tuesday (30 Jan) as the nation observed the 25th anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Indian government buried a capsule containing a microfilm record of Gandhi's writings and recordings of his speeches, at Birla House, where Gandhi was shot by a Hindu fanatic in 1948.

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the daughter of the Mahatma's closest disciple, Jewarharlal Nehru, laid a wreath at the Raj Ghat memorial to Gandhi on the banks of the Juans River.

The anniversary coincided with Martyr's Day in the country, in memory of all these who died in the struggle for Indian independence.

The national silence began at 11 a.m. after President V. V. Giri ???d a wreath on the memorial, scattering flower petals over it.

The day's observances began with hundreds of people gathered around the memorial with spinning wheels -- a symbol that Gandhi weed to great effect in his campaign for independence from Britain. The spinning he did as recreation was a cell to the people to boycott foreign-made, largely English cloth and manufacture their own.

Thousands of Indians visited Raj Ghat throughout the day.

SYNOPSIS: Tuesday marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the assassination of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi.

A delegate from Sweden was among several foreign guests who paid homage to the memory of Gandhi at his memorial on the banks of the Jumna River in Delhi.

Other foreign delegations joined with Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi in a special prayer service.

Prayers were led by the Indian Vice-President.

Gandhi was shot by a Mindu assailant on the lawn of Birla House. As part of the anniversary, the government buried a time capsule on Tuesday containing recordings and writings by Gandhi during his years of leadership of the Indian independence movement.

The nation observed two minutes of silence after President Giri laid a wreath and scattered flower petals on the memorial.

The memorial, which was the centre of the anniversary observance, is not Gandhi's tomb, but marks the site of his cremation. His ashes were scattered. Thousands of people visited the memorial to Gandhi, after the official services.
