  • Description

The difficult military situation in Lebanon may lead to a call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. According to Reuters news agency Lebanon's Ambassador to the United Nations Mr. Ghassan Tueni has said that a Lebanese move to have the Security Council called was very possible. The follows the failure so far of attempts to restore Lebanese government authority over the troubled south of the country. The Lebanese Prime Minister Mr. Selim Al-Hoss this week discussed the crisis with President hafez Al-Assad of Syria.

SYNOPSIS: The Lebanese Prime Minister, on the right, was met by his Syrian counterpart, Mohamed Ali Al-Halabi. The flying visit to Syria came within days of a major setback to Lebanese forces. Mr. Hoss was reported to be anxious to discuss the failure of the Lebanese army to gain authority over the country's solution region with President Assad.

The Lebanese government has worked closely with Syria, which has provided forces to help fight the Christian militias in Beirut. Meanwhile, Lebanon's own recently-reformed army has had to pull back from its advance into southern Lebanon, after being bombarded by Israeli-backed rightists controlling the area near the Israeli border. The Lebanese deployment had been advocated by Syria. The damascus talks concentrated on possible solutions to the crisis which Reuters describes as a tug-of-war between Israel and Syria to gain influence over Lebanon.

According to Reuters, the Lebanese and Syrian delegations found that their views of the situation remain similar. Mr. Hoss said the talks were useful and positive, and he hoped that they would bear fruit. He did not specify the results of the talks, but confirmed that Syria has promised continued support. A spokesman for President Assad merely said the leaders discussed various political and military solutions.
