TRANSCRIPT: THANT: "We are gathered here for the 6th extraordinary session of the Committee of the Whole of ECLA to consider the possible means of international action and cooperation in connection with the recent earthquake disaster in Peru. The tremendous loss of lives and property, the magnitude of which is quite staggering, calls for the expression of our deepest sympathy. But this is not enough. It is also an event which challenges us to work together to alleviate the consequences of the tragedy. Instead of being overwhelmed by despair, we should be ready, -- with a new sense of purpose and dedication, to rebuild and reconstruct what has been destroyed of the past into a more promising future for those who have suffered from the tragedy."
