  • Description

Argentina's President Maria Peron tried to stem the rising tide of calls for her resignation in a televised national broadcast from her hospital bed on Thursday (6 November).

Mrs. Peron, the second wife of late Argentine leader Juan Peron, went into hospital three days ago with what was officially described as a gall bladder complaint. But at least one Argentine newspaper published an unconfirmed report that she tried to commit suicide with an overdose of tranquilisers.

The crisis is believed to have come after Senora Peron reacted hysterically to advice from leading trade unionist Senor Lorenzo Miguel. Senor Miguel, who had been one of the President's few remaining supporters, suggested she should resign.

During her four-minute television speech which started more than two hours late without explanation, Senora Peron said there was no reason for her to resign and she had no intention of asking for leave of absence. She said she would stay in office with the support she had been promised by the armed forces, the Church, organised labour and the political parties.

Senora Peron is facing a nationwide scandal over alleged misuse of public funds during her 16 month rule and her speech did not appear to have much success in stemming the demands for her resignation.
