Background: ON THE DAY THE ISRAELI JETS MADE THEIR FIRST ATTACKS ON U.A.R. AIR BASES -- THE 5TH OF JUNE -- MOOD IN CAIRO WAS ONE OF OPTIMISM AND THERE WAS REJOICING IN THE STREETS. TELEVISION PROGRAMMES INCLUDED AN INTERVIEW WITH A SHOT-DOWN ISRAELI PILOT FILM OF EGYPTIAN FORCES IN ACTION AGAINST THE BRITISH AND FRENCH FORCE DURING THE SUEZ CRISIS IN 1956.

AIR RAID SIRENS WAILED IN CAIRO EARLY IN THE MORNING OF JUNE 5. PEOPLE AT FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS A MOCK WARNING -- BUT WHEN THE SOUNDS OF ANTI-AIRCRAFT FIRE BOOMED OUT, THEY REALISED IT WAS A GENUINE RAID. TRAFFIC STOPPED AND PEOPLE HURRIED TO SHELTERS AS THE THUDDING OF THE GUNS ECHOED ACROSS THE CITY. THE SIRENS SOUNDED THE ALL CLEAR AFTER ABOUT TWO HOURS, BUT HALF AN HOUR LATER THE ALERT WAS SOUNDED AGAIN AND THE GUNFIRE RESUMED.

CAIRO RADIO SAID ISRAELI HAD ATTACKED ALL ALONG THE SINAI BORDER. THE PEOPLE OF CAIRO CONTINUED IN AN EXCITED MOOD, MANY OF THEM WALKING ABOUT LISTENING TO DEVELOPMENTS ON TRANSISTORS RADIOS. YOUNG MEN MARCHED ABOUT THE STREETS -- FREE OF TRAFFIC -- SHOUTING ANTI-ISRAELI SLOGANS. THEY WERE JUBILANT EVERY TIME AN ANNOUNCER SPOKE OF AN ISRAELI PLANE SHOT DOWN.

THE U.A.R. FOREIGN MINISTRY ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: "ISRAELI STARTED AGGRESSION AT 0900 LOCAL TIME (0600 GMT) TODAY BY LAUNCHING AIR RAIDS OVER EGYPTIAN AIRPORTS, CAIRO AND THE CANAL AREA. OUR FORCES REPELLED AGGRESSION". CAIRO SAID SEVEN ISRAELI PILOTS HAD BEEN CAPTURED IN THE SUEZ CANAL AREA, AND ONE YOUNG PILOT APPEARED ON CAIRO TELEVISION. LATER, IT SAID ANOTHER SEVEN HAD BEEN CAPTURED--BRINGING THE TOTAL TO 14.

CAIRO TELEVISION ALSO SHOWED FILM OF THE EGYPTIAN FORCES IN THE 1956 FIGHTING. BOTH RADIO AND TELEVISION CONTINUED IT'S OPTIMISTIC WOOD ABOUT THE CONFLICT AND BROADCAST MATERIAL MUSIC AND PROGRAMMES.

DURING THE 1ST DAY CAIRO TV CARRIED REGULAR ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MARTIAL MUSIC AND FROM TIME TO TIME SHOWED FILM OF THE 1956 FIGHTING.
